Kelsey Austin Walsh
Kelsey Austin Walsh is a photographer I stumbled upon on flickr whilst searching for photographers who take photographs themed around isolation, I could not find a picture of the photographer themself or information about them as other than his Flickr blog page he/she doesn’t have another website. Kelsey has a variety of pictures in his/her 331 photo portfolio covering a range of themes from surfing to isolation themed photographs which are the ones that I was inspecting that drew me to his/her page.
Kelsey Austin Walsh’s work on isolation is a much darker take on the subject than Lagerstedt and Opitz’s as the photographs he/she takes are less about the landscape and scenery and more about the person and what is happening to them. The left photograph is similar to something I have experimented with after seeing a picture of someone submerged in water in Pinterest. This kind of picture is interesting to me as not only is the image portraying the turmoil that someone is feeling but also the turmoil of the water itself as the person is submerged. I feel as though the images/setting can reflect emotions well and in a strong manner. What Kelsey has done with his/her work is placing a black background in the water and probably making the model wear a black shirt to add to the impact to the image. The image on the right is a similar concept but in a completely different environment. The figure is still mostly submerged in water but it is in what looks like a river as the water is turbulent and seemingly fast flowing, this reflects the emotions of the man as he appears to be either angry or incredibly distraught. The angle the right photograph is taken at is also different as it is more of a side on view as opposed to look down on the subject. The use of a river makes the subject seem much more isolated than just using a bath or black out area of water as the river Kelsey uses seems to be out in the country side isolating the subject in setting as well as emotion.
